The Ralink RT2820 is a radio transceiver chip that's part of the Ralink RT2800 chipset. This chipset was Ralink's first generation of 802.11n adapters. It's typically paired with either an RT2860 or RT2890 (PCIe) MAC/BBP chip. The RT2820 specifically operates in the 2.4GHz frequency band.

Key features and characteristics of the Ralink RT2820 and related chipsets:

  • Wireless Technology: It supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n standards and uses MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology.
  • Performance:
    • It can achieve data rates up to 300Mbps.
    • With a 20MHz bandwidth, speeds can reach up to 144Mbps, and with a 40MHz bandwidth, up to 300Mbps.
    • It supports 2 transmit paths and up to 3 receiver paths (2T2R/2T3R).
  • Security: It supports various security protocols including 64/128-bit WEP, WPA, and WPA2.
  • Applications: The RT2800 chipset, including the RT2820, was used in wireless network adapters for various devices, such as desktop computers (PCI Express cards) and potentially in network-enabled Samsung TVs or Blu-ray players.
  • Operating System Support: Devices utilizing this chipset typically support Windows operating systems (2000, XP, Vista) and Linux kernels.

Note: Ralink was a company that produced wireless networking chips. In 2011, it merged with MediaTek. You may find information about subsequent chipsets under the MediaTek name.
