Overview

Askey RTF8115VW is a dual-band 802.11ac GPON residential gateway supplied by Movistar in Spain as an HGU or Router Smart WiFi.

The device integrates a GPON ONT, four-port Gigabit Ethernet router, dual-band wireless access point, USB host port and one analog telephone interface.

Hardware notes

Main platform

The main SoC is an EcoNet EN7526GT. The platform integrates GPON, Ethernet switching, QDMA and hardware NAT functionality.

The main memory is:

Winbond W632GU6NB-12
256 MiB DDR3/DDR3L

The main flash is:

Macronix MX35LF1GE4AB-Z4I
128 MiB SPI-NAND

2.4 GHz wireless

The 2.4 GHz radio is a MediaTek MT7592N.

  • IEEE 802.11b/g/n
  • 2 transmit chains
  • 2 receive chains
  • 2 spatial streams
  • 2 U.FL antenna connectors
  • PCB RF labels: 2G-1 and 2G-2

The stock firmware contains references identifying the physical wireless chip as the MediaTek MT7592N.

The vendor wireless driver may appear under the inherited filename mt7603eap.ko. The module filename does not necessarily match the physical chip marking.

5 GHz wireless

The 5 GHz radio is identified from the stock firmware as a MediaTek MT7615E.

  • IEEE 802.11a/n/ac
  • PCI Express interface
  • PCI vendor/device ID: 14c3:7615
  • 4 transmit chains
  • 4 receive chains
  • 4 spatial streams
  • 4 U.FL antenna connectors
  • PCB RF labels: 5G-1 through 5G-4
  • Vendor driver: mt7615_ap.ko

The MT7615E marking is hidden by the fitted heatsink. Its identification is based on the stock firmware configuration, driver module and PCI device alias.

The 5 GHz subsystem has dedicated memory:

ESMT M15T1G1664A
128 MiB DDR3/DDR3L

The board has six U.FL antenna connectors in total: four for the 5 GHz radio and two for the 2.4 GHz radio.

Ethernet

The unit has four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports.

Two dual-port Gigabit Ethernet magnetics modules are fitted:

Lankom Electronics LGT-4813S-B

The EcoNet Ethernet datapath uses vendor modules including:

eth.ko
fe_core.ko
qdma_lan.ko
qdma_wan.ko
hw_nat.ko

Telephone interface

The analog telephone interface uses:

Microsemi / Microchip Le9641

This is a single-line FXS SLIC.

USB

The device has one external USB 2.0 host port.

Power supply

The original power supply is rated at:

12 V DC
2 A
barrel connector

PCB

The observed PCB marking is:

RTF8115VW-D112 REV4

The stock software reports REV5. The software product revision and the physical PCB revision appear to use different numbering schemes.

Firmware

Observed firmware version:

ES_g14.17_RTF_TEF001_V9.17_V034

Firmware package metadata:

Family: RTF81XX
Model: RTF8115VW
Profile: TEF
Bootloader version: 12
Release version: g14.17_RTF_TEF001_V9.17
Private version: V9.17.0
Revision: 13020

The firmware distribution contains:

TEF_ES_V034
RTF8115VW_TEF.tcboot.bin
RTF8115VW_TEF.tclinux.bin
RTF8115VW_TEF.info

The stock firmware is based on an EcoNet/TrendChip vendor Linux SDK and includes proprietary GPON, QDMA, hardware NAT, telephony and wireless modules.

Bootloader

The device uses the EcoNet / TrendChip TcBoot bootloader.

The analyzed bootloader image is approximately 128 KiB and includes support for:

  • DDR2/DDR3 initialization
  • SPI-NAND access
  • NAND ECC and OOB handling
  • Bad-block management
  • BMT
  • Main and backup boot environments
  • Dual firmware banks
  • TFTP-based recovery and firmware loading

Flash layout

The exact MTD offsets have not yet been confirmed from a live /proc/mtd dump.

Partition or storage-area names referenced by the firmware include:

tclinux
tclinux_slave
os1
os2
bootenv0
bootenv1
reservearea

The 128 MiB SPI-NAND contains the bootloader, firmware banks, configuration data, boot environments, bad-block management data and wireless calibration information.

Stock firmware modules

Notable vendor modules include:

eth.ko
fe_core.ko
qdma_lan.ko
qdma_wan.ko
hw_nat.ko
mt7603eap.ko
mt7615_ap.ko
DSPCore.ko
slic*.ko
fxs*.ko
pcm*.ko

Serial interface

A four-pad unpopulated header marked J502 is a probable UART interface.

Firmware strings indicate:

ttyS0
115200 baud
vt100

Expected serial settings:

115200 baud
8 data bits
no parity
1 stop bit
3.3 V TTL

The J502 pinout has not yet been electrically confirmed. Ground, voltage and transmit pins should be identified before connecting a USB-to-TTL adapter.

The USB-to-TTL adapter VCC pin should not be connected.

Interfaces

  • Integrated GPON optical interface
  • 4 × Gigabit Ethernet LAN
  • 1 × analog FXS telephone port
  • 1 × USB 2.0 host port
  • 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 2x2:2
